Beauty That’s Ultra Luxe and Sustainable

Prestige cosmetic brands are developing artful packaging intended to be kept—and flaunted. Here are six of the faves we’ve highlighted in the past year.

Sustainability has crossed paths with luxe brands—delivering a number of gorgeous, prestige, must-have products, many of which are refillable.

1. La Bouche Rouge Lipstick

La Bouche Rouge is priced at $157 for a refillable leather case and lipstick (the lipstick refill is $52 separately).

Founder Nicolas Gerlier, a French beauty veteran, says, “Because an estimated one billion lipsticks are thrown away every year in the world, we designed the first environmentally friendly refill with no PP or POM, and made in Bretagne.”


2. Hermès Lipstick

Can’t afford a Birkin bag? Hermès Beauty lipstick ($67) is housed in a luxe refillable metal case designed by Pierre Hardy, shown above.


3. Kjaer Weis Red Collection

The Kjaer Weis Red Collection is a fully recyclable extension of the decade-old beauty brand’s award-winning recyclable system. Word has it that before she became a makeup artist, Kirsten Kjaer Weis wanted to be an architect. Her passion for design shows in her brand's packaging. The Danish-born makeup artist says, “I founded Kjaer Weis on the belief that we can live a sustainable lifestyle without compromise: luxury can look good, and be good for you and the environment.”

4. The Valdé System

Margarita Arriagada, a former Sephora exec launched Valdé in one-of-a-kind custom packaging. 

Valdé lipstick's custom case, made with a zinc alloy, resembles a woman’s silhouette. The Valdé System is entirely refillable and reusable—featuring interchangeable vessels and formulas. The patent-pending design allows the brand's lipstick, balm and liquid formulas to interplay between any Valdé vessel (Valdé Armor and Lip Set: $199).

The inaugural Valdé Armor, SOAR features intricate feather detail that celebrates each women's individual and collective power. Inspired by a woman's curves, Valdé Armor symbolizes ‘her strength, resilience and beauty,’ according to the brand. 

5. Cosmydor

Cosmydor is a French heritage brand, newly revived and now stocked at Net-a-Porter. The prestige skin care line is housed in graphically rich, of-the-moment sustainable packaging. 

Cosmydor’s original packaging was a true work of art, designed by Jules Cheret. Now, 129 years later, Grems, a talented French artist, has reinterpreted this design legacy, creating three graphic designs, that are printed on the boxes of three face creams in the brand’s Intense Skincare range, as well as on the solid soap (prices range from $15-$115).

The brand is pushing sustainability in beauty to a new standard, according to re-founder Xavier Quattrocchi-Oubradous, with 100% biodegradable products, regional sourcing of packaging, exclusion of plastic containers, and gentle manufacturing processes with no waste of energy or water.
 

6. Cyber EDP

Cyber EDP claims to be ‘the first fragrance with sustainable printed electronics and a clear environmentally friendly message.’ 

When you press the power button on the label, the name CYBER in dark-grey, almost black, lights up in a bright red light. ‘The universal recycling and earth symbols blinking in red act as a reminder that we should protect our planet and pay more attention to our environment, says LOOK LABS founder Jordan Katzarov. He says the design and functionality of the label is to draw attention to the immediate climate crisis and environmental issues.

Katzarov says he wanted to create ‘the ultimate luxury fragrance that combines traditional craftsmanship with the latest disruptive technology. Choosing the highest quality ingredients and materials was an imperative step in the process of designing and crafting a product that is unique and the first of its kind on the market.’

Katzarov says the printed electronics technology was used ‘to make the product resonate with the new generation of smart, tech-savvy, and environmentally conscious consumers.’ The label, cap and outer packaging are sustainable and the perfume bottle is refillable.

The perfume retails for €240/$280 and refills are available.
