Vaseline continues its efforts towards skin health equality with the launch of its ‘Mended Murals’ multi-city initiative, using art restoration as a method to highlight the importance of skincare for people of color. This initiative underscores the need for increased access to resources in underrepresented communities.
Building off the efforts of the SeeMySkin.com platform, the Mended Murals initiative intends to make skin health care more accessible.
SeeMySkin.com launched in 2022 as a first-of-its-kind platform designed to search conditions of skin of color and connect affected patients with physicians who understand their skincare needs.
Vaseline is working with diverse artists across the country to help restore murals and support local clinics to provide accessible healthcare in nearby neighborhoods. With every restored mural Vaseline is providing funds to support local health clinics.
"Mended Murals is a continuation of Vaseline's long-standing commitment to enable 15 million people of color to access more equitable skin health care by 2025,” said Kathleen Dunlop, CMO of Unilever Beauty and Wellbeing, North America.
To date, Vaseline has commissioned mural restorations with artists based in Brooklyn, NY, Hartford, CT, and Baltimore, MD. Certain murals guide viewers to SeeMySkin.com to access skin health resources. A total of $250,000 has been donated by Vaseline to local clinics in each city where the murals are restored.
Dunlop added, "We explored murals all over the country, contacting their original artists to bring our vision to life. Vaseline is helping to restore local murals and support clinics that provide accessible health care to community members. Every mural restoration project helps encourage community members access to skin health resources."
Vaseline will partner with Black Future House showing up in Austin, TX for a multi-day event bringing founders, builders and creators to “shape a better Black future.”
On March 9, Vaseline will be hosting a panel to discuss the importance of representation and health equality.
Journalist and author Elaine Welteroth will moderate the panel which will include muralist Ernest Shaw Jr, dermatologist Adewole Adamson, Unilever beauty & wellbeing senior R&D director Tiffany Yizar, and Unilever’s head North America strategy and personal care division chief of staff Kevin Tolson.
