Meitu, a beauty and photo app that allows users to create an idealized version of themselves, is extremely popular in China. Meitu and its related apps have more than 446 million users in the country - and its easy to see why. With just a few swipes, users can lighten their skin, taper thier jaw, slim their cheeks - and more.
Now, Meitu's founders have completed a $629 million IPO in Hong Kong, hoping the app will have worldwide appeal.
Meitu's features seem tailored to Asian preferences and an Eastern beauty ideal that includes whiter skin, but the company says that the app can be tailored toward user preferences in every country, around the world.
The NY Times reports: "Meitu will rely on an algorithm to adapt as it moves into other markets. The company collects data on which functions are used the most. Then it uses that data to create or tweak tools to give users what they want, often in consultation with beauty experts, celebrities and local advisers."
