Practices such as dipping fingers into a jar of moisturizer or sharing lipsticks and color palettes with friends have been frowned upon for years by cosmetic users wary of bacterial spread—and suppliers and brands have responded with numerous solutions.
Now, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, when even touching your own face briefly is deemed verboten, hygienic applicators have become a priority for many consumers, and demand is growing.
“Consumers are and will continue to be more aware of hygienic practices than ever before,” says Lauren Goodsitt, senior global beauty analyst at Mintel. “A new segment of sanitizing products will likely emerge to keep both products and applicators exceptionally clean.” Goodsitt says, “Consumers will be more conscious of choosing applicators that minimize germ exposure and will look for sanitary ways to store their cosmetic applicators.”
