    Alibaba Notes Sustainable Beauty Buying Trends

    A shift towards environmentally conscious products is on the rise.

    In recent years, the beauty industry has witnessed a significant increase in demand for “clean” and sustainable beauty products—those made with natural and sustainable ingredients, free from harmful chemicals, and using environmentally friendly packaging. Ethical sourcing and cruelty-free beauty are often preferred by conscious consumers. Sustainable beauty is on the rise as consumers seek eco-friendly and resource-saving alternatives to traditional beauty products.

    Consumers are Demanding Environmentally Conscious Products Globally

    As consumer demand for environmentally-friendly products drives brands to adopt greener practices, we see a positive impact on the beauty industry and the planet. From March 2022 to March 2023, Alibaba.com saw 109% more inquiries for eco-friendly and water-efficient products year-over-year and the number of sustainable beauty products listed increased by 42%, showcasing a significant shift in consumer preferences.

    U.S. Beauty Goes Green

    While consumer interest in sustainable beauty products is on the rise globally, the United States stands out for its significant increase in demand within this category. Two recent top-selling beauty products in the U.S. include sustainable shampoo bars, which experienced remarkable 73% YoY growth, and organic face serums, with a 62% increase.
     
    Renewable resources also drive demand – Alibaba.com saw a remarkable 107% YoY increase in global buyer inquiries for beauty products containing vitamin C. This popularity is partly attributed to eco-focused consumers gravitating towards it, as it is often sourced from renewable resources.

    Using Upcycled/Recycled Materials Is Commonplace

    One of the key aspects of sustainable beauty products is the use of upcycled or recycled materials for packaging. We’re seeing more and more brands incorporating recycled plastic and paper packaging in products like shampoo bars, lip balms and makeup palettes. For example, PiperWai, a natural hygiene company, uses Post Consumer Resin or “PCR” plastic that takes up 60% less energy to produce than virgin plastic, diverting plastic waste from landfills and waterways while conserving energy and fossil fuels. Some brands even repurpose materials like coffee grounds and fruit waste to create exfoliants and face masks, reducing waste and promoting a circular economy.
     
    As the beauty industry continues to evolve, the emphasis on sustainability and eco-consciousness is likely to grow stronger. By choosing sustainable beauty options, consumers can play an active role in supporting a more eco-friendly future, while looking after their own skin and well-being.
