As you probably know, Johnny Depp is currently suing his ex-wife Amber Heard for libel for saying she is a victim of domestic abuse—and Heard is countersuing. The trial began April 11—and the live-stream is on Court TV for all the world to see.
Why is Milani Cosmetics involved? Dazed Beauty reports that Heard's lawyer, Elaine Bredehoft, showed the court Milani Cosmetics' All In One Correcting Kit—as "evidence," sort of.
NBC News states that another of Heard's attorneys, J. Ben Rottenborn, said in an opening statement “This was what she used,” meaning it was the makeup Heard used throughout the relationship to cover her bruises. Or, perhaps the lawyers meant it was the type of makeup. The name of the makeup palette was never mentioned—but the packaging clearly reveals what it was.
And in what sounds just like a Cher Horowitz moment (as in the lawyer Alicia Silverstone played in "Clueless"), it appears that Heard's lawyers aren't up to-date-on on makeup launches. The Milani kit wasn't on the market yet when the lawyers said Heard was using it. Milani Cosmetics posted the TikTok video embedded below saying it launched a year later.
The Independent reports that Milani Cosmetics' says in the now-viral TikTok video:
“You asked us… let the record show that our Correcting Kit launched in 2017!” they wrote in the TikTok video. “Take note: Alleged abuse was around 2014-2016, got divorced 2016, makeup palette release date: December 2017.”
In Heard's defense, Dazed Beauty reports that Heard's friend said the lawyer was only showing an example of makeup that covers bruises, without specifically meaning that is the one Heard used.
Some beauty consumers aren't happy with Milani getting involved, saying the brand is making light of what victims of domestic violence go through.
