Estee Lauder Will Be The 1st Beauty Brand In Space
Estee Lauder is going to be the first beauty brand to launch into space -- and the second-ever commercial product in orbit. NASA has also partnered with the sportswear company Adidas, Vice reports. The brand has sent soccer balls and parts of its Boost shoes to the station on separate missions. (Update: Tom Cruise will shoot the first-ever movie in space in October 2021.)
New Scientist's Mark Harris first broke the news -- announcing that Estee Lauder will film a commercial at the International Space Station. "Ten bottles if the serum will be flown on the ISS resupply mission," Harris tweeted, saying it's the first commercial activity for NASA, as a way to raise funds for research. (Estee Lauder is paying NASA $128,000 to be a part of the flight.)
"We are thrilled to reinforce our leadership once again as the first beauty brand to go into space," said Stéphane de La Faverie, group president, The Estee Lauder Companies & global brand president, Estee Lauder.
“NASA is at the forefront of space exploration, and as a leader in skincare innovation, Estée Lauder is proud to support the incredible work NASA is doing to promote a space economy by being the second-ever commercial product to launch,” de La Faverie adds.
Phil McAlister, director of commercial spaceflight development at NASA Headquarters, explains:
“NASA is opening the International Space Station to business as part of the agency’s efforts to enable a robust low-Earth orbit economy. Agreements like these directly support NASA’s broad strategy to facilitate the commercialization of low-Earth orbit by U.S. entities by demonstrating new markets utilizing the unique environment of space.”
