Back in the
early eighties, when
the optical disc was
first introduced, it
was considered a
giant leap forward
for audio storage
and reproduction.
For many years this
new format was
produced solely by
the major record
companies in
clean-room
environments, with
both operators and
support staff
dressed ready for
the next mission to
the moon!
In the early
days, the job run
quantity of discs,
produced for each
album, was very
large with single
runs being in the
tens of thousands.
Today, with the
advent of the
internet and
just-in-time
production
infra-structures,
those run quantities
per job, have become
much smaller with
multiple
simultaneous job
runs being the norm
in all companies,
large and small;
thus making the
printing process a
serious bottleneck
to production and
above all very
costly.
Tapematic
began research in
2002, and
immediately gained
vast experience with
the UV inkjet
process and general
know-how. In 2005,
when technology
allowed acceptable
print quality,
Tapematic produced
the world's
first optical disc
printer and called
it the
“2Print”
.
With a
foundation of thirty
years in building
machinery for tape
loading, Tapematic
went about producing
a practical machine,
and one that allowed
customers to simply
print discs without
complication or
altering the method
established process.
The simple inclusion
of an in-line white
flood station,
standard spindles,
and a deliberate
offset print
quality, has
endorsed the 2Print
as being the
accepted method to
digitally print a
disc, being adopted
by large and small
producers
alike.
The
advantages of
digital printing are
obvious, giving the
concept immediate
success with many
tens of units being
sold within the
first year of its
launch.
Today, 2Print
is offered in two
versions; the 4S and
6S, the 4S being a 4
colour plus white
machine, while the
6S is 6 colour plus
white. In addition
to the fast
turnaround and job
change time of 20
seconds, the inkjet
printing process
does not produce any
twisting, distortion
or unbalance of the
disc; with there
being no contact
with the disc during
printing, (with the
amount of ink laid
down being under 10
microns), thus
making it perfect
for printing onto
Blu Ray, and indeed
any type of optical
media.
