New App Scans for Beauty Ingredients

Formulators and product developers, beware. A new free app called Think Dirty alerts consumers if a product contains any potentially toxic chemicals, including BHA / BHT, PEGs, petrochemicals, parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde releasing agents, siloxanes, sulfates, fragrance/parfum and non-biodegradable ingredients.

It works like a barcode scanner, and users will immediately see "clean" or "dirty." If a product is called "dirty," alternative products will be suggested.

Holly Richmond, author of a story about the app on Grist.com., tried it and said these 3 products came up as "toxic" - Dove deodorant, Organix hair oil, and Burt’s Bees face wash.

There are over 12,000 products in the appp's database, and over 1200 brands. Consumers can upload photos of brands, and Think Dirty's team will add them to the database.

For every product scanned before Halloween, a dollar will be donated to the Breast Cancer Fund.
