Inter Parfums Inks International Deal with Gap

2008-04-30 08:56:00

Inter Parfums, Inc. has expanded its current relationship with Gap Inc. with the signing of a four-year licensing agreement for international distribution of personal care products through Gap and Banana Republic stores as well as select specialty and department stores outside the United States, including duty-free and other travel-related retailers.

Commenting, Jean Madar, chairman and chief executive officer of Inter Parfums, stated, “We agree with our business partners at Gap Inc. that expanding the distribution of Gap and Banana Republic personal care products beyond North America and outside Gap and Banana Republic stores makes good business sense. We test marketed certain products at select European retailers and the results to date have been extremely encouraging.

"This initiative is being undertaken to capitalize on cross-border brand awareness of Gap’s iconic American style and Banana Republic’s affordable luxury, which we have interpreted into a brand-specific assortment of fragrance, home fragrance, bath and body, and grooming products. We have long-established relationships with distributors in over one hundred countries. Our infrastructure should help enable the rollout of product to select department stores, perfumeries, travel retailers, military bases and other appropriate retail outlets around the world.”

Beauty Boosts Avon’s First Quarter

2008-04-29 09:25:00

Avon Products, Inc. posted its first-quarter 2008 results with a rise in total revenue 14% to $2.5 billion. Sales of beauty products jumped 17% and included increases in all categories: fragrance grew 20%, color was up 15%, personal care rose 15% and skin care increased 13%, according to the company.

Net income in the first quarter 2008 was $185 million, compared with $150 million in last year’s quarter.

Andrea Jung, chairman and chief executive officer, commented, "Again this quarter we produced solid results on the momentum of our turnaround plan and the strength of our well-balanced geographic portfolio. Active Representative growth accelerated to one of the highest growth levels in many years, 14%. This reflects our investments in the Representative Value Proposition (RVP), such as expanding our Sales Leadership program, increasing sales campaign frequency and improving commissions and incentives to our Representatives. Additionally, we continued to benefit from our strength in developing and emerging markets around the globe to more than offset the unfavorable impact of economic softness and service problems in North America.

"With this solid start to the year, and despite the challenges in North America, we remain confident that we can deliver on our 2008 objectives to achieve a full-year operating margin that approaches 2005's level of approximately 14% and revenue growth in line with our long-term target of mid-single-digit growth," Ms. Jung concluded.

Alberto-Culver Reports Strong 2Q, First Half 2008

2008-04-28 09:42:00

Alberto-Culver Company—manufacturer and marketer of personal care products including TRESemme, Alberto VO5, Nexxus and St. Ives—posted record sales and earnings from continuing operations for its second quarter and first half of fiscal year 2008.

Net sales for the first half increased 10.7% to $813.5 million from
$734.5 million in the prior year. For the second quarter, net sales for the second quarter increased 7.7% to $412.8 million from the prior year quarter. The company also reported that its gross profit margin increased to 53.4% compared to 52.1% in the prior year quarter, mainly due to more effective inventory management and manufacturing efficiencies.

Commenting on the second quarter, Alberto-Culver President and Chief Executive Officer V. James Marino said, "Our strong performance this quarter was due to the continued growth of TRESemme as well as growth in other beauty care brands including St Ives and multicultural brands Motions and Soft and Beautiful. We are very pleased with the profitable sales and earnings growth generated, especially when considering last year's second quarter launch of TRESemme in Mexico as well as significant pipeline shipments of Nexxus in the club channel in the prior year and the lapping of restructuring savings.

“I am particularly proud that in the U.S., TRESemme and Nexxus' consumer consumption rates, a critical measure of the health of our brands, both increased at double-digit rates during the latest twelve and fifty-two week periods, far outpacing the category. In a challenging retail environment, characterized by mixed consumption trends, we were able to deliver another record quarter of sales and earnings growth for our shareholders."
