MAC Cosmetics is launching a collection of six fragrances on November 30th called Shadescent. Each fragrance was inspired by one of the brand's best-selling lip colors, and has packaging to match. The collection debuts on MAC's website and at Macy's.com, before landing in stores on December 8th.
The Shadescent collection includes Ruby Woo, Lady Danger, Heroine, Velvet Teddy, Creme d'Nude, and Candy Yum-Yum fragrances, which are each named after an existing lipstick. The boldly colored square fragrance bottles are shown above, along with the matching lip colors.
When creating the fragrance collection, James Gager, MAC's sr. VP/group creative director and Jennifer Balbier, senior vice president, global product development, decided to try a completely new approach to product development. Gager tells Elle, "We have a fan base attached to certain lipstick shades....maybe there is another way that we can approach this that isn't a 'me too' situation."
The result? Rather than feature top, middle and base notes, each Shadescent fragrance features one distinct note - and they smell just like one might imagine when looking at each lipstick. For example, Candy Yum Yum is a Barbie pink lip color, and a sweet, fruity scent. The pale toffee Creme d'Nude is a soft musky amber.
MAC is betting its lipstick fans will be intrigued.
