HBA Global Expo 2002 promises to be bigger and better than 2001.

The HBA Global Expo, North America’s premier personal care exposition, will take place Oct. 14-16 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York. For the event’s tenth anniversary, organizer CMP Princeton announced there will be a prestigious industry awards program honoring influential industry personnel, products and packaging on the opening night of the show, Oct. 14, at the Hilton Hotel in New York.

“HBA Global Expo has become the industry’s gathering place,” said Suzanne Grayson, HBA awards program chairperson. “On our 10th anniversary it is only befitting to honor the people, products and packaging that have made significant industry impacts and contributions.”

Opening night awards will include:

Lifetime Achievement in Product Development award for a person who has made major contributions to the advancement of technology in the cosmetic and personal care industries over a lifetime,
New Product R&D Technical award acknowledging the creativity, ingenuity and technical prowess of a person or team that developed and introduced an innovative new product between November 2000 and June 30, 2002 and
Packaging Executive of the Year award honoring a packaging executive whom has demonstrated years of devotion to packaging excellence and innovation.

Estée Lauder’s Chairman to Address Visitors
Also on opening night, Estée Lauder Companies’ board chairman Leonard Lauder is expected to address attendees in his speech entitled, “A View from the Top: the next five years.” He will offer keen insights on the state of the cosmetic and personal care industry, and share his vision for the future.

Lauder, who formally joined the company in 1958, has consistently developed and implemented innovative sales and marketing programs, and increased the company’s sales and profits, such as Estée Lauder’s international expansion, which began in 1960 with the opening of an account at Harrods in London. Under his leadership, the company also launched many new brands, including Aramis, Clinique, Prescriptives and Origins and acquired trendy independent brands such as Bobbi Brown and Stila.

Packaging Design Winners Displayed During Expo
Also at the award reception on Oct. 14, the HBA will announce the winners of the International Package Design Awards (IPDA) awards in seven product categories: limited distribution—fragrance (including bath and body), cosmetics and skin care; mass distribution—cosmetics, fragrance (including bath and body), personal care and skin care.

The two-part judging process begins with the “Committee of 100,” which has the responsibility of selecting finalists in each of seven categories. The finalists are then judged by the heads of the packaging and/or design departments of major marketing companies.

The packaging finalists and winners will be prominently displayed in a special showcase area at the Javits Center during the show. The IPDA award is sponsored by Cosmetic Packaging & Design and Happi magazines.

Only packages introduced in the U.S. or abroad between Nov. 1, 2000 and June 30, 2002 or packages introduced abroad prior to Nov. 1, 2000 but not available in the U.S. until Nov. 1, 2000, are eligible.

Attendees to HBA Global Expo 2002 will have even more to see than they did in 2001.

PCIX Debuts at HBA
Personal Care Ingredients Expo & Conference (PCIX) will debut and be held concurrently with HBA Global Expo at the Jacob K. Javits Center. Executives said PCIX combines the marketing and development strength of HBA Global Expo with the technical strength of CPhI Worldwide, a leading organizer of pharmaceutical ingredient events. PCIX will focus on recent advances and the developments in ingredient technologies and bioengineering, as well as transfer and delivery systems to create a new generation of cosmetics, skin care, hair care and cosmeceutical products.

PCIX will also include the 4th Annual Product Development Technical Conference. Topics include new product development ideas, improved efficacy of existing products and reducing overhead costs. PCIX will be located in the Galleria of the Crystal Palace at the Javits Center, directly above the HBA Global Expo.
